Should the state require teacher certification for parents who homeschool their children?

What are the current requirements for parents homeschooling their children? It seems like there should be some standards in place for parents to follow if they are going to choose to educate their children at home. If simply any parent can teach their child curriculum that the parent doesn't understand then how is the student benefitting from this form of education?

  1. My wife's sister home schools so this question kind of hits home with me. I very rarely say anything about it when ever we are around them just to keep the peace, but it does eat away at me. I do now that they have curriculum that they follow.

  2. Wow! This is exciting! It's about time! I've never understood how public education could be held to such standards and yet the homeschooling world not at all. Interesting... any such laws in Michigan?

  3. I have two cousins that are home schooled and they both seem very intelligent and the one who is 18 is now in college and doing very well. If fact all the home schooled kids I know are doing well. I would think that the quality of education they receive is highly dependent on the parent.
My aunt seemed pretty confident in teaching some of the material but when it came to upper level high school classes she had the boys take online classes.
With the huge advantage of one on one instruction I believe if the parent is well educated they should be able to teach their kids without a certificate...especially if online courses are available.
